Below is a brief explanation about my illustration for the show: Sufjan Stevens solidified his unique brand of experimental multi-instrumental baroque pop-infused indie folk with the album Illinoise. As part of The Fifty States Project, Illinoise is a tribute to the state of Illinois brimming with notable and obscure references including The Chicago World's Fair of 1893 where the Ferris wheel was first introduced, construction equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc., UFO sightings and the Sears Tower. Sufjan's rich lyrical style offers a broad spectrum of visual inspiration. My illustration references his lyrics and also reoccurring themes like death and inexplicable phenomena. State symbols such as the white-tailed deer, white oak, Chicago star and the monarch butterfly are filled with vibrant color and brushwork. As one of the most ambitious albums of the past decade, Illinoise was a natural choice.
